Guess what?! Plastic-free baby on the way!
Two notables:
1. My first trimester was pretty darn easy. I know I can partly thank the 2.5 year cleanse I have been on through the plastic-free challenge. Worth every nausea-free morning. Been reading about that some, and while no one can really say why some women get sick and others don’t, there seems to be general consensus that a detox is advisable before egg meets sperm. I would certainly agree. To me it makes sense that you would feel better if you have nothing bad in you.
2. I do have aversions to certain things, notably mushrooms and…plastic. On the latter: Around 3 months, I had this crazy lunatic craving for 99-cent instant noodles and I sent Nino to buy some. Yep, totally and knowingly tried to cheat, but I paid for it. I ate the fake processed packaged crap and spent the rest of the night dry retching outside. Now, the sight of most plastic covered things make me so ill that I am gagging just thinking/writing about them. I guess it’s the next level of abhorrence.

Congratulations! Do you knit/sew? I’m guessing those skills will help with plastic-free motherhood… And how’s the house coming along?

Congratulations! There are heaps of non-plastic baby products out there, and heaps of the stuff they say you need for your baby, you don’t (it’s amazing how our toddler can eat with a normal teaspoon and doesn’t need a plastic ergonomically designed baby spoon!). Try early potty training and you won’t have to wash as many nappies… Good luck. Helen.

I found your blog through a search for plastic-free WordPress blogs. Congratulations on your pregnancy! My husband and I are talking about having a kiddo for the first time, and I’m a bit intimidated by watching “Bag It” and becoming overwhelmed by plastic EVERYwhere. What steps are you taking to reduce the chemicals your little one is/will be immersed in, besides buying food without plastic? Thanks.

Plastic Manners
I am basically a total toxiphobe. You asked so I will just throw stuff out there…
I don’t eat processed plastic packaged foods (at least I have control over this in my house). This includes canned foods as the lining is no good. I don’t eat or drink stuff from plastic lined cups or other vessels). I buy/grow organic. I stay away from bad smells or hold
(my sense of smell has improved so much so I can detect the “dangers”). I barely use any personal care products; if I do the ingredient list has to be short and all natural and unscented. I now buy only organic materials for things like linens as we obviously spend a lot of time inhaling dust from these items. For the most part, I don’t wear polyester or other fake materials. Our house is painted with clay zero VOC paints and the floors are waxed with beeswax based wax. No new offgassing furniture, mattresses etc. I wash my hands if I think I’ve touched something gross. I avoid places that smell like a million chemicals, e.g. Many clothing stores, hardware stores etc. In my old house I kept the dust to a minimum- dust being one of the top 10 toxic items in the house (where dust is no longer fine dirt but flame retardants etc). I cook with a cast iron pan (my doctor told me I have copius stored iron for the pregnancy and I thank the pan) and only wood or metal utensils. Definitely no harsh cleaning products- again all natural or homemade. Avoid unnecessary medicines if I can.
my breath near teenage boys doused in chemicals
The list goes on… Some people roll their eyes at me and say I am a total paranoid freak. But, to me this stuff makes sense. The other stuff does not.
Let me know if there is something specific you wanted to know. I think it’s totally easy to avoid toxins and totally worth it.

Good luck with the baby making! Go do it somewhere out in nature
